SUMMARY OF REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

FDAregulates pet food under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act).


Pet food must be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, and truthfully labeled.


If making dog food for commercial sale, compliance with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) and ingredient approval is required.

California CDFA requires registration of commercial feeds and pet foods, accurate labeling, and may inspect for compliance.
